Black Rock

Championship Golf Along the Shores of Idaho’s Lake Coeur d’Alene...

Situated along the shores of Lake Coeur d’Alene, a lake that National Geographic calls one of the five most beautiful in the world, Black Rock has earned it’s position as the premier lakeside golf community in the western United States through meticulous planning and flawless execution. Located less than an hour from Spokane International Airport, while the Coeur d’Alene Airport caters to commuter and private aircraft of all dimensions, Black Rock is far away from the hustle and bustle of urban life yet easily accessible year-round.

Millions of years ago lava flowed over the 650 acre site that is now Black Rock, leaving basalt deposits that form the base of the mountains, cliffs and ledges evident throughout the site. Since the community was to bear the first signs of man’s inhabitation, great care went in to the selection of those who were to forever change the landscape. The decision was made to first paint the golf course across the terrain and then to delicately place the community’s homesites and amenities.

The challenge of designing The Club at Black Rock was placed into the very capable hands of golf course architect James Engh, who has designed memorable courses around the world including Sanctuary in Sedalia, Colorado which was named “The Best New Private Course” for 1997 by Golf Digest. Engh is a hands-on designer known for his innovation, creativity and ability to blend course layout with natural surroundings. Jim’s treatment of The Club at Black Rock is the result of extensive planning and each inch of every hole, from tee to green, bears his personal stamp.

The 7,130 yard course flows through the environment as it co-exists with the natural terrain and existing flora and fauna. Natural wetlands create a sanctuary for migrating waterfowl and a great visual experience.

Outcroppings of native rock and large stands of pine create natural obstacles that, when coupled with carefully placed bunkers, require the golfer on every hole to choose from a variety of shots depending on their skill levels and penchant for risk-taking. Inspiring views of Lake Coeur d’Alene, the majestic mountains and the beautiful wetlands create a sense of serenity found in few places.

The 11th through 14th holes are among the finest consecutive in the West. The par 4, 397 yard 11th hole tees are elevated on cliffs 100 feet above the fairway and finishes with a green twenty feet above the fairway guarded in the front by a lake and to the sides by waterfalls. The fairway on the par 5, 551 yard 12th hole clings to the side of the mountain while spectacular views of Lake Coeur d’Alene await on the right from tee to green. The 155 yard 13th hole is the first of a pair of back-to-back par 3s with breathtaking views playing to a green protected along the right by a long sand bunker and to the rear by ponds fed by tumbling waterfalls. The 154 yard 14th hole plays across a deep valley to a green at the base of an enormous rock outcropping.

The centerpiece of The Club at Black Rock is the new 30,000 square-foot clubhouse. Designed by Eric Hedlund with the firm Marsh & Associates, the clubhouse encompasses dining facilities, a magnificent pool, tennis courts and a state-of-the-art health and fitness center. Native rock and timbers used throughout construction of the clubhouse, outdoor terraces and patios ties the facility to the natural environment while expanses of windows provide endless vistas of the lake, golf course and local wildlife.

The club is exclusive with just 381 homesites that range from 1/3 acre to 2 acres as they follow the natural terrain up hillsides, along the rolling meadows and rock outcroppings and through forested areas. The Black Rock master plan designates estate lots, cottages, cabins and ranches where every home will be inspired by views of either the golf course, mountains, meadows or the pristine lake. Strict adherence to Black Rock’s design guidelines will assure that all will complement the community.

At a temperate 2,100 foot altitude, The Club at Black Rock makes all sports activities enjoyable for the entire family with a true four seasons experience. Power boating, personal watercraft, sailing, water-skiing and world-class fishing in nearby lakes, rivers and streams are popular from spring through fall while winter is full of activities with five ski areas located within 90 minutes of Lake Coeur d’Alene. The club’s Director of Outdoor Pursuits is available to assist with finding the right place and the right equipment, along with expert guides and instructors, to enjoy your outdoor pursuits.

Black Rock’s casual, congenial lifestyle allows the pursuit of the finer things in life within an environment found few places in the world, a blend of the best of nature and all a life of privilege has to offer.
