History & Background
Golf has been part of Queenstown's story for more than a century. While the club traces its origins back to 1915, Queenstown Golf Club found its permanent home on the Kelvin Peninsula in 1975, creating one of New Zealand's most iconic golfing settings.
For generations, members, visitors and the wider community have enjoyed a course shaped by its remarkable surroundings and a club built on a spirit of hospitality, stewardship and connection. Over the decades, the club has evolved to meet the changing needs of golfers while remaining true to the values that have defined it for more than 100 years.
Today, Queenstown Golf Club continues to honour its proud heritage while looking confidently to the future – preserving a special place where unforgettable golfing experiences and lifelong memories are made against the backdrop of Lake Wakatipu and The Remarkables.
Signature Hole
The 5th hole – "Shoreline" – is widely regarded as the signature hole of the Queenstown Golf Club, and for many visitors it becomes the image they remember long after the round has finished.
Perched on the edge of Lake Wakatipu, this memorable par 4 sweeps uphill and doglegs gently to the left, with the lake bordering the entire left-hand side of the hole. From the tee, players are immediately confronted with a classic risk-and-reward decision: challenge the water to gain the best angle into the green, or steer safely right and accept a longer, more demanding approach.
As the fairway rises towards the green, the views open dramatically across Lake Wakatipu to the surrounding alpine peaks. The ever-changing light, reflections on the water and the backdrop of the mountains make it one of the most photographed holes in New Zealand golf.
Yet its beauty disguises its bite. A tee shot pushed too far left is claimed by the lake, while those who play too cautiously can leave themselves a very long and difficult uphill second shot. The approach demands precision to a contoured green where distance control is essential.
The 5th captures everything that makes golf at Queenstown special: spectacular scenery, strategic decision-making, and just enough danger to quicken the pulse.
It is more than just a golf hole—it's a postcard moment, a strategic challenge, and an experience that defines a round at Queenstown Golf Club.
